Diana Chittester Will Perform at our Howlin’ Hootenanny!

Fresh from opening for Melissa Ferrick last month,  we are excited to announce that Diana Chittester will be performing at the “Howlin’ Hootenanny” benefit for the Ohio Lesbian Festival on Sunday April 29th!

Imitating a four-piece band with a single acoustic guitar, Diana’s percussive attack incorporates funky bass lines while pounding out explosive rhythms and attention grabbing leads. She accompanies her powerful instrument with a genuine storytelling passion which leaves her audience enticed to follow every word. Carl De Scott from the Examiner described Diana as, “very aggressive in your face style kinda’ folk with a funky punk edge singer-songwriter.
Growing up the daughter of a minister from ‘small town PA’, Diana soon discovered the power of lyrics when her music began to question the religious structure of her adolescent years. Not afraid to address taboo topics, Diana’s lyrical content examines sexual encounters, the politics of religion and the paternal influences over a young woman.

Moving out on her own she quickly gained attention in the local open mic scene when she relocated to Pittsburgh. Soon after moving to Cleveland, OH she decided to pursue a more serious music career. She became a major player in the local music scene and opened shows at venues for acts such as Jennifer Batten (lead guitarist for Michael Jackson & Jeff Beck), blues guitarist Kelly Richey, and nationally known comedians Vickie Shaw and Suzanne Westenhoefer. Her talent and enthusiasm has allowed her to share the bill with headliners as diverse as Catie Curtis, Melissa Ferrick, Bitch, Katie Todd, and Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown. Diana has headlined her own shows at venues like the Cleveland House of Blues Cambridge Room, The Winchester Music Hall and has gained regional attention by playing festivals, fundraisers and venues throughout the East Coast.

Diana has received airplay and interviews on college radio stations, regional cable music programs and internet radio and podcasts. She has been recognized as a major player in the music scene and as Robert Conner from the Lakewood Patch puts it, “she is a young, energetic and a sassy guitar player… her voice has a raw soulfulness, and just enough sass. . . (she) is someone to keep an eye out for.” Diana is currently creating her first full- length CD, scheduled to be released on her own artist run label, Fighting Chance Records, in the spring of 2012. Diana independently released her first EP titled, Soul, in 2009.

Crys Matthews added to the Howlin’ Hootenanny Line-Up!

The Ohio Lesbian Festival is pleased to announce that we have added Crys Matthews to our line-up for our Howlin’ Hootenanny Line-Up. You might remember her from our 2010 line-up.

Check her out here singing about her first Michigan Experience:
http://www.reverbnation.com/artist/video/8871664

Although she is constantly referred to as ‘the next Tracy Chapman,’ Crys Matthews describes herself and her music as: “Imagine Jill Scott and Otis Redding had a daughter and Tracy Chapman was her god-mother… now imagine she spent summers teaching herself piano in Chicago and guitar in the mountains of North Carolina… that would probably sound something like the music I am fortunate enough to call my own.” The music is an infusion of Americana/Blues/Bluegrass/Folk/Funk/Jazz, which, as eclectic as it sounds, is reaching people all around the world and causing them to stop and take notice.

A self-proclaimed old soul, the southeastern North Carolina native first popped onto the local music scene in Boone, NC in 1999 as a vocalist/keyboardist with the band Half & Half before breaking out with her own solo career. Since then she has been a permanent fixture at venues like Caribbean Cafe, Jimmy’s Java, Cafe Portofino, and Higher Grounds.

“Music has always been a part of my life — even before I actually took my first breath,” she says. The daughter of a preacher, the 26-year-old admits that gospel music was her first love. “I’m always amazed at how much true soul music sounds like what I grew up listening to in church when I was a little girl,” she says.

With a fan base that continues to widen and a second album slated for release in the spring, it seems that things are indeed going to be more than fine for this artist.

Get Involved!

Did you make a New Year’s resolution to become more involved in the womyn’s community?  Are you looking for a way to meet new womyn while having fun? Well here is your opportunity! The Ohio Lesbian Festival is looking for a few good womyn to help produce the 2012 festival.

For the past 23 years hundreds of women have gathered every September in Licking County for the annual Ohio Lesbian Festival. But before that magical weekend can take place lots of behind-the-scenes work needs to be done. And this is where you come in! The festival organization is having an open meeting for any womyn who is interested in helping to produce the festival. There are currently positions open for co-ordinators in various areas such as ad sales, workshops and outreach. There is also a need for women who would like to participate in non-leadership roles.

We will be having a general information meeting on March 10, 2012 at the Panera, located at 300 West Lane Ave. ( in the campus area), Columbus, OH, at 10am.  The Festival Planning Committee invites you to attend and find out how to become more involved.

The Ohio Lesbian Festival is produced by an all-volunteer group of womyn and is open to all womyn.   Ensure the future of this festival by becoming involved now.

Our 2011 Festival Survey

Great weather, fabulous performers and amazing music, and changes in the food offerings added up to a wonderful experience for the womyn who traveled to the 22nd Ohio Lesbian Festival.

The festival committee is already back at work planning the 2012 festival and we need your assistance.  If you attended the festival last month we want to hear from you!

Did you enjoy the campground?   Which performer was your favorite and who do you want to see next year?  What brings you to the festival each year?

Please take this short online survey and let us know your feelings? We will consider each womyn’s opinion as we strive to build a strong and vital community.

Also you can enter into a raffle for a free ticket for next year’s festival if you complete the survey!  It’s a win-win situation.  So take a few minutes and talk to us.

Photography Workshops

The Ohio Lesbian Festival is always kind of a homecoming for me. My dad graduated from Utica High School in Licking County, and my grandma still lives there on a piece of property that I lovingly refer to as Hogdogpollywog Camp. I started my grade school career at Utica Elementary in 1979 and stayed there until 1984.

I grew up around photography and went to college for photography at both the Art Institute of Pittburgh and Ohio University. I have taught photography at a local college and in workshops off an on for about 12 years. My partner Devin Page and I own Roberts Family Photography, a portrait studio that specializes in children’s photography.

We also have two other divisions of our studio, Roberts Teens and Seniors specializing in high school senior portraits and Pink Panty Pin-Up Photography – specializing in authentic 1940′s pin-up portraits. (If you are interested in learning more about being a pin-up girl, dressing in the pin-up style or having pin-up portraits taken our business partner, Hot Tomato Pin-Up Academy is offering the Bombshell Beauties Workshop. )

I have been the festival photographer for three years now and have been managing the website and other marketing/graphic design tasks for two years now. Devin and I met at the Ohio Lesbian Festival. This will be the first year that I have offered a photography workshop.

This year I am offering two workshops – How to Take Better Photographs with the Camera You Own and How to Take Better Concert Photos.

If you are interested in taking either of these workshops here is some information you might find helpful.

The How to Take Better Photographs workshop is geared towards all skill levels. I will gear the workshop to participant interests and camera function aptitude. I honestly believe that people of all skill levels can take something away from this workshop.

I will offer an open question and answer format. If I have someone who is interested in advanced information I will go more in depth in the last 30 minutes of this 90 minute workshop.

What we may cover:

  • How to get the most out of the camera you have
  • Shooting in low light
  • Buying a new camera
  • Why it doesn’t matter what camera you own
  • Improving your photographs
  • When to leave it to the pros
  • Finding the light
  • What editing program to use
  • Basic camera controls such as ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Histogram and shooting on manual
  • Anything else you want to know

What I will not cover:

  • How to run a photography business

What to bring:

  • A chair
  • Your Camera (point and shoot, film, or digital SLR)
  • Your Camera Manual (I am super serious about this :) I don’t know the in’s and out’s of every camera and this is the best way to help me help you!)
  • If you don’t have any of these things feel free to come any way! I would love to meet you!

The How to Take Better Concert Photos workshop is geared towards the more advanced photo hobbyist. Of course anyone is invited to participate and I will gear the information towards the crowd present but it is my intent to discuss using the camera on manual, reading the histogram and other advanced technniques.

What we may cover:

  • Concert Etiquette
  • Exposure
  • Vantage Point
  • Compostion
  • Equiptment Choices
  • Tricks I have learned

What to bring:

  • A chair
  • Your Camera (film or digital SLR)
  • Your Camera Manual (I am super serious about this :) I don’t know the in’s and out’s of every camera and this is the best way to help me help you!)
  • If you don’t have any of these things feel free to come any way! I would love to meet you!

If you have any questions before or after the workshop please feel free to email me at robertsfamilyphotography@gmail.com you can also check out our website at www.robertsfamilyphoto.com and our Pink Panty Pin-Up facebook page at www.facebook.com/PinkPinUpPhotography
